and hidden at their foot is the Catholic Seminary of Scalan, dating from 1717. Boys and young men were sent here for training for the priesthood, an illegal activity at this time. Despite its remote location, the Hanoverian soldiers occasionally discovered it. It must have been a hard life for the boys, usually from privileged backgrounds, where they had to grow their own oats and kale for porridge and kale soup!
