Bleak
This morning confirmed my memories of rural Lincolnshire in winter, damp, dull, and grey! The roads are clarted with mud. Nevertheless, I felt in need of some exercise, so walked out on a loop of fenland roads. The fields are flooded and cabbage crops are rotting, giving off their characteristic, fetid smell. No wonder Fen aigue, a form of malaria, was prevalent in earlier centuries. I was glad to get back to a lunch of warming soup, a local French blue cheese I had picked up in the Auvergne and peanut butter on toast.
