Another windy day
The wind has been howling for most of the last 24 hours and it is expected to continue until later on Friday. We had freezing rain and ice pellets last night and most flat surfaces were a sheet of ice this morning.
When I put the bird feeder out this morning I didn't put any seed on the railing, knowing that most of it would blow off before the birds would get it. The squirrel came and sat in the feeder though, so the small birds could not get anything. I scattered some peanuts in the shell on the deck for the blue jays and the crows. After they finished I did go back out and put some seed on the railing. A lot of it did blow off, but fortunately it went onto the deck so the birds were able to get it there.
I went out front and put some salt on the steps, walkway and part of the driveway to melt some of the ice. Then the winter solstice event that I had planned to attend was cancelled due to the wind and ice, so I have been home all day.
One of the blue jays picked up a peanut, then landed on the railing. He decided he wanted a different peanut so dropped the one he had on the railing. He landed on the deck again, grabbed another peanut and flew off. A chickadee grabbed the peanut he left on the railing.
The goldfinches were around most of the day. This afternoon I was watching them, and first thought one of them was a brighter yellow. When I looked at it again I realized that the pine warbler is back. This is the first time in almost a week that I have seen him. He spent most of the afternoon flitting between the trees and the deck.
Between bird watching, working on a jigsaw puzzle, cross stitch and scrolling thru FB the day went by. I also did some housecleaning. I do have to go out tomorrow to get a few groceries.
