Unfortunately there were too many clouds to see the first sunrise after the winter solstice earlier this morning and clouds obscured the sunset.  This was taken through the bathroom window about ten minutes after sunset with the silver birch tree outlined against the pale sky. The length of day here today is 6 hours 58 minutes with the sunrise at 8.42 and the sunset at 15.40 giving a few seconds less daylight than yesterday and tomorrow.   In comparison the length of day in London today was almost 7 hours 49 minutes (51 minutes more than here) but Shetland in the north of Scotland was only just over 5 hours 49 minutes with sunrise at 9.08 and the sun sets before 3 o’clock for 18 days in December.  At first the day's length will increase only slightly for another couple of weeks.
