Christmas story

A delightful read on Christmas day. Carol Ann Duffy was Poet Laureate for ten years and this her re-working of  Scrooge is delightful.

Like her dead husband,  Mrs Scrooge is frugal, but where Scrooge was frugal out of meanness, Mrs Scrooge is frugal because she worries about the state of the planet. ‘She hated waste and consumerism, foraged in the London parks for chestnuts, mushrooms, blackberries, ate leftovers, recycled, mended, passed on, purchased secondhand, turned the heating down and put on layers, walked everywhere, drank tap-water, used public libraries, possessed a wind-up radio, switched off lights, lit candles and would not spend one penny on a plastic bag.’ At Christmas she protests about turkey farming.
