Happy throngs
Crowds thronged to Sydney yesterday, as they always do on New Years Eve for the spectacular firework display. People queue for hours to secure the best positions around the Harbour and the Bridge, and for even longer to get home afterwards.
We have only once experienced those safe, happy throngs around the Harbour, and the camaraderie and the excitement were unforgettable. To be honest, that wasn’t New Year but Australia Day, 26 January, in 1988, but the feeling was the same.
It was long before we knew about selfies, of course, so here we are on that day, in two separate photos.
