Loch Tay

On the longest day, got up early this morning and wandered into Kenmore. I liked this view from the bridge over the River Tay looking down the loch. To me this sums up the stunning beauty of Scotland.

Loch Tay is a magnificent dark stretch of water and is the largest loch in Perthshire and one of the deepest in Scotland. To the north, the loch is flanked by the impressive mountain range of Ben Lawers, much of which is designated as a National Nature Reserve.

It's hard to believe that ancient settlers once lived on Loch Tay, inhabiting artificially created islands known as crannogs. There are eighteen crannogs on Loch Tay, most are now submerged but a large crannog near the northern shore at Kenmore can be clearly seen. This was the ancient burial place of Queen Sybilla, wife of Alexander King of Scots.
