My happy orchid is flowering again

Having enjoyed  photographing the bougainvillea yesterday, I was reminded that my orchids needed both watering and feeding. Having brought them downstairs to do this I thought they deserved recording too. This orchid is one of two similar types that I have managed to not only keep but bring to flower once again many moons after their first flushes.

This one seems to have now gone into a new cycle at a different time to the other, which itself flowered beautifully last year with twice as many buds as it had produced when I’d bought it. This current orchid looks like it will also have many more flowers, as it has already produced four and there are another eight buds already in various stages of growth.

I’ve learnt a lot about how to repot them and am glad that my choice of a clear plastic pot has been absolutely essential. The new root stems look so much healthier than ever before and I can now see clearly when they start to dry out and need a good drink. Having a flowering plant that produces beautiful blooms at the beginning of the year is such a treat.

I think I will look out for old orchid plants that have been mistreated and try to bring them back into being healthy and happy plants. Supermarket often have remaindered orchids, which have suffered by being put on sale in their doorway where cold winds and draughts do them no favours.

These flowers are likely to be around for many weeks so I may well blip them again on another dreary winter’s day.
