Anne's Daily Encounters

By dutchdelight

I am fine she said

Visited mums friend, who's the last of my parent's generation still around. She's 96 years of age now and still going strong. Luckily she has her wit in full possession and although aging blinded her, she's living alone at her family house with the help of two caretakers, the one doing her administration and taking her for walks, the other cleaning her house on weekly terms. "I am fine" she told me and we talked of the past and the present. She's known me from my earliest days in life, when we both lived in Indonesia and ever since as they belonged to the inner circle of friends of my parents. Apart from stories from Indonesia she told me of their life in Gabon and paying a visit then to Albert Schweizer, who was working then at his hospital there (in 1962)... recalling sweet memories was what we did most and I couldn't upset her with the news that her and mums other friend from their youths, had recently died at the age of 100 years.
