A lovely walk...
...along the canal at Marsden...
Called in at Slawit to drop a couple of things off for Simone and had a spot of lunch at Culture Café - an immense Croque Monsieur!
Then a short drive to Marsden and a sunny walk along the canal to Tunnel End. I'd never been, and it must be 30 years since Roy visited.
Standedge Canal Tunnel was built 1794-1811 for the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. At 5.2km, it is the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in the UK.
Well it would be - it's in Yorkshire after all...
The canal crews used to "leg it" through the tunnel - in other words by lying on the top of the narrow boat or a plank across the bows, and "walking" it through via the roof and walls.
Sounds strenuous - our walk was very pleasant by comparison, with lots of sunshine and reflections - see extras ;)
