A very rare bird

We were brought this rare fellow last night. It is an Australasian Bittern. ( NZ had one which is now extinct) They are present in New Caledonia, Australia and NZ. Numbers are under 1000 birds- so are critically endangered. They live and feed near wetlands, and have been tracked to travel up to 10 km during an evening. Known for a very deep boom noise. This young chap is very hungry, otherwise ok. So we are hopeful to be able to release it
