Nature’s baubles

At first I thought these were the fruits of a Plane Tree but now I’m not so sure. I couldn’t see the trunk as it was hidden behind a wall with a hawthorn hedge in front of it. Perhaps someone knows what it is. A chilly day with a few glimpses of the sun. A frost is forecast for tonight
