Conditions such as these occur infrequently. Just the right amount of ice coverage to support the falling snow, yet with sufficient heat in the water to keep some areas from freezing completely. I love the other worldly feel of this image and the unusual circular shapes receding into the distance.

I took many shots looking for different patterns and combinations of sizes and shapes. Fascinating. I also tried a few faster frames to freeze the falling snow, but my options were limited in the low light. I think the streaky snow in this image softens it somewhat, increasing its ambiguity.

I took a similar shot in Dec 2019, but the shapes were quite different.
