London's lights

Just after 4pm we all took a train to Waterloo. Mum had wanted to see the London Christmas lights. I’d looked at booking one of the ‘tours’ that are run on open-top buses but to get an upper seat - the main advantage - would cost over £100 for the four of us and it would still be a weather gamble. Instead, I figured upstairs on the 139 from Waterloo to Oxford Street would get us most of the main lights.

We were the only ones with the idea and there was quite a scrum to board: no stoical queuing here. One lady physical pushed her little daughter through the crowd to board. It was quite a sight. We did manage to get upper deck seats so no problem.

The route took The Strand, Trafalgar Square (to see the tree), Regent Street (including the lower part and lovely tree) and Oxford Street. We disembarked at John Lewis. The crowds were incredible. It seems we were not the only people out to see them. Regent Street, in particular had people trying to stand in the middle to get a good photo.

We walked from South Molton Street (disappointing) and crossed New Bond Street (pictured, lovely) to end up back on Regent Street. Mum loved the angels. We walked alongside Liberty - briefly stepping inside - before existing to the crowds on Carnaby Street.  This was the busiest space but we got to see the Universe lights which are great and, I know I am repeating myself, not that festive.
