Pilot Whale Stranding - Quendale Beach

Despite the bleak weather at the south end, I did walk the length of Quendale Beach this lunchtime. This was partly to get a fix of (damp) fresh air , but also looking for a pilot whale that was reported as having washed up there this morning.

I haven't seen a pilot whale up close before. This one is 8-10 feet long, and despite being washed up relatively recently there are already signs that the local gulls and skuas have already started scavenging. I've posted a few more images on my Flickr account.
