I worked with Eamon for years (1990-2003 I think) but there were beers lunches and other meet ups (often at funerals) after.


It was his funeral in November and I had a great chat with his elder son reminiscing.  Like how I would answer his phone without revealing that I was strictly his senior and he’d be told when he called back that his secretary was helpful. Hence Perry Mason and Della Street because as everyone knows Della did all the work and Perry took the credit.

At some point we discussed countdowns because Excel is great for this and we’d often have several on the go, but the rule was anything higher than 500 was depressing and therefore banned.

During my personal chaos last year the civil service final sorted out their pension rules which had been impossible to understand since 2018 when two firefighters took the government to court over age discrimination.

So with a nod to Perry, I picked a date to finally go and set up a countdown on my phone.
