Ice Formations

In certain parts of the roof, I get these ice formations rather than icicles.  Some can be quite interesting.  I always wonder how the random holes form.  Why didn't it just melt down in a solid sheet?  They are lovely when the sun shines through them. No sun this morning, another snow/rain event tonight.  Again, tomorrow will approach 50F.  What a strange winter we are having.
