The Mud Flats

The River Carron in Stirlingshire, at it's mouth is the industrial port of Grangemouth (curiously named after the Grange Burn that flows through the town rather than the river). A couple of hundred years ago ships would travel upstream here to Carronshore which was a small port at the time. The shipping then progressed to the port of Grangemouth that really came into it's own in the late 1700's and 1800's with extensive trade to the continent and the US and Canada. Today it's still one of busiest ports in Scotland. You can see the port in the middle background, the refinery is off to the top right.

Most of the industry on the Carron is now dead, but the salmon are back.

Shot was taken at 23:15 in the summer twilight.
