Back story?

To Dunfermline for a meeting in the very impressive city chambers. Wonderfully historic building - though there wasn’t anyone around who could tell me the story behind this anguished chap, immortalised in gold high on a wall in our meeting room. There were a few compadres, but they were all a bit more benign!
