Mabel Ellen Higgins
This is my great grand mother of whom I have no memory. This is me taken at Christmas 1957 when I was four months and she died in July 1959.
She was one of the hardest of my relatives to track down as I think her history is more complcated than most who resolutely stayed put either in Gloucestershire or Cornwall.
Her father is a good example of one of those Cornish miners who exported their skills all over the world.
Mabel was born in South Africa in 1880 but her brother was born in Camborne, back in Cornwall in 1882.
In 1885 the family arrived in New York but returned to Liverpool in 1894. She got married to a tin miner in October 1897 at the ripe of old age of 17. I think, but only think, that she and her family then spent time in Canada and Australia before settling back to camborne in 1911 and staying there thereafter. A fascinating life and I am sure she had stories to tell that I will never hear.
I was so pleased to find this photo amongst my mother's thousands of photos I am sorting through.
