Disappointment upon disappointment

Our air conditioning broke down between Christmas and New Year. That was obviously not a good time to be trying to get it fixed and we were very grateful to the people who helped us out. Unfortunately it didn’t stay fixed. For a while it continued to fan, though not cooling, but now it is totally defunct. The replacement is ordered but can’t be installed until February, and meanwhile some very hot days are forecast.

We have been lent this evaporative cooler as a temporary fix. We now know more about these coolers than we did before. They aren’t very effective and they can only cool a small room or a person. They are oppressively noisy. They pump out damp air and have to be placed at an open window to prevent condensation. (Since the air outside is hot, the open window seems to defeat the original purpose.) They have to be continually topped up with water, up to four litres an hour. And they don’t work in a humid climate, which ours certainly is at the moment.

We are now looking for a Plan B.
