"What would it be like to be evil?"
A question the artist Philip Guston asked when looking back on the Holocaust and at racism around him.
Exhibitions by Guston were generally postponed after the murder of George Floyd, in case his work was misinterpreted. Guston is a satirist. He paints Klansmen doing ordinary banal things. They look comical.
In light of the rise of the 'big orange one' this is a timely show at Tate Modern.
One of my favourite quotes from Guston: "Probably the only thing one can really learn, the only technique to learn, is the capacity to be able to change."
