The castle that isn’t
After doing the chores: shopping, baking bread etc. I took myself off to visit Castell Coch (Red castle). It is a fairytale castle that was built around 1880 by William Burgess for the 5th Marquis of Bute as a Follet medieval castle. It was built on the site of a genuine 13th century hunting lodge. It’s a remarkable place to visit mixing medieval castle with Victorian splendour. It nestles on the side of the wooded Taff valley and is an impressive and surreal landmark as you travel out of Cardiff on the A470 road to Merthyr. It’s much loved as a location for films and television production including the BBC’s Wolf Hall and Dr Who.
