Between fen and mountains

Not paved with gold

The streets in town may not be paved with gold but they are paved with marble. The quarry shut after the First World War when many of the men did not return. The marble looks pretty but it is very slippy after rain and I usually walk on the road to avoid taking a tumble. I finished the market shopping fairly quickly as there are fewer people in winter and I go early. We have a new tennis coach who started today. He is excellent. There were just three of us at French conversation this afternoon, a Dutch lady who speaks quite a lot of French and an English guy who speaks virtually none. That made it quite tricky.
