Marigold carnage

My wife planted out some marigolds a week or so ago. Today I noticed that one of them had been attacked by something that had removed the flowers and left them lying on the soil. It looks as though some of the stalk has been devoured. A bird? A snail or slug? A mouse or shrew? I'm not sure.
