Scoots, Shoots & Leaves

"Absence of Emptiness"

Sculpture by Juergen Eckstein, 2012, carved from a single piece of redwood. It sits behind the Newport, Oregon, Center for Visual Arts. The plaque next to it says it was inspired by this rather bleak poem by Gottfried Benn:

Two Things
gone through so many words
through I and we and you
that could all be borne
with the eternal question: why?
this is a child's question
only late you became aware
there is no choice but accepting
your predetermined: you must
whether roses, whether snow or oceans
whatever blossoms decays
there are only two things:
emptiness and the individual I

Here's another angle. And here's another sculpture of his, "Some However," at the Performing Arts Center.

We are at the beach for a few days for some much needed R and R. Scoots along the promenade, long naps, reading - and maybe some catching up with Blip comments!
