The leaves of ferns are called fronds and when they are young they are tightly coiled into a tight spiral as seen in this photo.
This shape, called a ‘koru’ in Māori, is a popular motif and seen in many New Zealand designs. It symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace.
The green foliage is the tip of an unfurled frond.
