A weighty task
Son and granddaughters came round with a task to perform: making gluten-free cookies for a gluten-free visitor.
I had pea flour already and, recipe found, son got out the digital scales. But I spotted a fun learning opportunity and substituted two other types of scales: the old-fashioned mechanical kind with a bowl and a dial (L), and the even older-fashioned kind with a scale pan and actual weights, both metric and avoirdupois (R). Much more instructive!
The weights were interesting to hold and compare and so was measuring out the ingredients and watching the scale pan hover and balance as the correct amount was achieved.
.
We used the old style hand whisk too, not the electric kind that spatters the mix all over the place if you're not careful.
Discussions took place over what the cookies should include - chocolate drops, raisins, peanut butter? Yes to all three.
Although the cookies turned out well the girls turned out not to like the flavour of the pea flour and settled instead for crumpets before they went home mission accomplished. (And lessons learnt!)
