Sawley Abbey

After an unpromising start the weather improved so I ventured further afield to the outskirts of Clitheroe and visited Sawley Abbey, which are the remains of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1148. After its dissolution in 1536, the monks briefly returned to the abbey during the Pilgrimage of Grace, which was a revolt in Northern England, principally York, against the break with the Catholic Church. They remained in possession until the insurrection's collapse. The abbot was hanged as one of the ringleaders of the revolt.
