Apt Backblip - This Much

Filling in due to nightshifts and it's been raining heavily so here we go.

Spotted this last Sunday in Holmfirth, marking the height the water reached on the River Holme running through the centre of Holmfirth.

The stone marker is on the corner of Victoria St & Market St, and the water level on Sunday, a good 5 metres below.

The reason the level got so high on February 5th 172 years ago was because the banking at Bilberry Reservoir collapsed upstream from here causing a flash flooding of the valley below and the deaths of 81 people.

Learning things like this makes me grateful for the emergency response to the failing dam at Toddbrook, Whaley Bridge in 2019, the remedial work from which should finally be completed later this year.
