IT'S WIDE WEDNESDAY
It is Wide Wednesday and the Challenge theme is "Weather With You."

Given all the snow we've had lately and the well below zero temps, it's almost an anachronism that the last 10 days have been above average temperature-wise. In fact, we've not been below freezing for the last 10 days and it's predicted to stay that way well into the next week.

And Mother Nature is reacting. This is prime ice-fishing time on Big Elkhart Lake. You can see those little white patches on top of the ice......the remains of where ice fishermen have drilled their holes and the ice forms a mound around the hole.

You don't see any fishermen do you? See how blue the surface ice is? By the end of next week it will be very dark, almost black. It's melting and is quite unsafe. It's already pulling away from the shoreline. Just this morning a snowmobiler sunk his machine through the ice on Green Bay only 60 miles (<100km) north of this lake. He was heard yelling for help and last I heard the fire department was on its way. What? Fire department for a water rescue? Yeah....in the North Woods, our firefighters are trained in all sorts of rescue situations.

The sturgeon spearing season opens in 3 days and I'm pretty sure there will be lots of water rescues if this warmth continues. This whole winter has been nothing but ups and downs, hills and valleys and no plateaus. It's either been too much snow or not enough, too high a temperature or way too cold. I long for the good old days of semi-dependable weather.
