Everyman silver screen

Went to the Everyman cinema in the William yard this afternoon to see the new version of The Color Purple. I did love the original film with Whoopi Goldberg and this was so different, all singing and dancing, movement and sound and full of colour. The huge themes of race and the place of women in society, incest, rape and alternative lifestyles were all portrayed. I had read the book a long time ago and was still surprised at how much I had forgotten!

The relief of knowing that her ‘father’ was not her real father surprised me and the final scenes when her sister returned with her children were very special. Subtext of First Nation families signalled by clothing! Fascinating and of its time from current perspectives!
