another walk another blip
On a 3 mile walk to the local shop, I noticed this mushroom growing on a dead tree stump. I had always thought that mushrooms were plants, but they are part of an organism kingdom - fungi - which includes yeasts and moulds as well as mushrooms and is separate from plants, animals and bacteria. The study of fungi is mycology. Although they are often a source of food as in mushrooms and truffles, since the 1940s fungi have also been used in the production of antibiotics and biological pesticides to control weeds and plant diseases. On the right hand side of the picture you can see where the mushroom has rooted itself in the crack in the tree stump - from where it is getting its nutrition.
