‘Le Ciel’

This book, its full title is ‘ Le ciel; notions élémentaires d'astronomie physique by Amedee Guillemin’, is nearly 150 years old. 

For a book purporting to be introducing basic astronomy, it is undoubtedly ambitious and, at nearly 1000 pages, it is also certainly thick!

I remember that, as a child, I was particularly fascinated by the golden lettering and illustrations adorning the leather cover and well as the illustrations - many of them meticulous line drawings - to be found inside.
