Made some progress on the technology front . . . complete analysis points to the Sony Black Screen of Death without a doubt . . . the only problem is that of all the ideas I have found . . . none of them work. Managed to get the old TV going today . . . steam power wins. No time to do anything else so will leave it for another day. Not even convinced that a new TV would work.
