Black Bull Yard runs alongside the oldest coaching inn in Northallerton dating back to the 17th century. The Black Bull Inn serviced the very first London to Edinburgh Mail Coach to pass through town in 1785. 

Today the Black Bull is a little smaller and different than back then. It still has a number of rooms available to stay in but the main purpose of the building is to serve fish and chips in its shop and restaurant.

In Yorkshire a passageway like this is known as a ginnel.
