Between
The two dams in the fog.
On my left is the original Lake Murray Dam ( actually Saluda ShoalsDam) and on the right is the backup dam (in case of a catastrophic event and the other earthen dam breaks down). The backup dam was finished in 2005. My hubby worked for the power company at the time and spent many days here doing whatever he did.
There are also gates that can be opened to lower the water level when we get too much rain.
The original dam was completed in 1930 to supply hydro electric power for this area. Many communities, homes, and churches are now under water. When they were constructing the new dam they drew down the water of the lake which enabled us to see areas where tombstones were underwater. I do not even want to know about the remains!
There is now a paved walking path along the upper dam on the lake side which is a three mile round trip. I have walked it before but it is way too close to zooming traffic for me. To the right the Saluda River that flows through the hydro heads toward Columbia to meet the Broad River and then goes to the Atlantic.
A local history moment.
