The other St James
This morning, two of the churchyard survey volunteers and I, at the request of the vicar and the churchwarden, investigated a mystery area of what looked like concrete about a hand’s depth below the ground. It turned out to be a brick-lined vault. We haven’t as yet found out whose it is as it’s lacking a headstone and we’re now deciding what best to do (I suspect record it and cover it over again as it’s quite a bit lower than the other surrounding memorials).
Afterwards Hector and I went to Heyshott church as I remembered seeing similar style graves there and I wanted to get some pictures and an idea of the date range.
