Vinyl Sundays -My Album
Front of house pictured..
Very tired and not my best ever prepared talk about The Stranglers (Black & White) - but more than compensated by the interesting facts, showmanship and fun I think hope.
* Played the video clip of The Milky Bar Kid TV advert - as I handed out these white chocolate bars to everyone.
The Milkybar Kid – TV Advert (1970s) – last 10 seconds
* Prizes for best b&w dress of members - Everton Mints, Liquorice, Can of Stout, and B&W anti-perspirant
Quite disregarded in punk/ new wave history, B&W was the third of three hit albums they did in 13 months. They were the second best selling "punk" band after the Sex Pistols, though a much more complex sound influenced by jazz, blues, psychedelic etc, and also each instrument had turns at taking the lead.
Peter Hook - bass guitar player of Joy Division, then New Order took a photo of the Stranglers bassist Jean-Jacque Burnel kit so he could go and buy the same bass set up!
I also wonder to what extent The Stranglers track below influenced the title, style etc of the Joy Division track below (had no keyboard).
The Stranglers – Black and White – In the Shadows (1978)
Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures – Shadowplay (1979)
Been a extremely busy recently (still am) - so very selfish for a while yet x.
