Life and Fate

Vassily Grossman’s masterpiece set during the 1940s battle for Stalingrad is a surprisingly ’easy’ read despite its length and (very) grim subject matter. I’ve just finished it and it seems appropriate this weekend with the news from Putin’s Russia of Navalny’s tragic death.
