Day out in Cromford

Richard and I blocked out today in the diary for some quiet time together, something we haven't done for a while. A friend had recommended Scarthin bookshop in Cromford, about an hour's drive south of here.
What a place!  The kind of bookshop that I thought had been driven out of business years ago. A warren of narrow staircases and leaning shelves, offering a wealth of both new and secondhand items.  My first job, after leaving school, was as an assistant in a shop somewhat like this in Bath (long since closed down).  There's a vegetarian cafe too. More info about it all here:

So the main shot is from one of the top floor rooms, where nature books could be found. A comfortable armchair by the window, a choice of books to browse through... a real haven.  One of the extras shows a view of the shop from across the mill pond that's in front of it, the other is from a nearby shop that we didn't go into this time, though it exerted a strong pull :-)
There's extensive industrial history here too, as Cromford Mill was built in the area by Richard Arkwright. The whole valley has a string of mills along it, once powered by the River Derwent. All that is for another trip, another day.
Needless to say, we came home with quite a few books...
