The beach at Dungeness
A day out today down at Dungeness. As an excuse for a large portion of fish and chips at the Pilot public house we had to go on a long walk around the Ness.
Dungeness is an amazing place, the UK's only desert - and indeed it was dry today - but not very sunny. A large area of shingle banks, rare and unusual plants and animals, collections of houses and shacks some made of old railway carriages all dominated by Dungeness A and B Nuclear Power Stations. Windswept, open skies even on the calmest of days.
The walk started and finished at the Pilot and went along the coast eastwards in front of the power stations from where this shot was taken. I like the light and the lines. The only bit of sun we had for most of the walk. Hard going on the shingle, particularly towards the end where the public right of way across the shingle didn't exist (well not that I could see anyway)
The best of the walk was through the RSPB nature reserve where old gravel pits have flooded and become a haven for birds of all sorts. Saw a Reed Warbler and Terns along with a Buzzard.
Fish and chips were good after an 8 mile amble as was the 2 pints of Ruby Mild. Another part of the Kent Coast Walk done.
