Statue Park
Just to the side of the Central House of Artists which stands on the south side of the Moscow River opposite Gorky Park and houses the modern Tretyakov Art Museum as well as a huge exhibition hall and various other art related projects, is the Park of Statutes.
The park was founded in 1992 by the City of Moscow and currently holds over 700 statues.
Originally the park was mainly dominated by the "fallen statues" - when the Soviet Union collapsed the statues of Soviet leaders and unidentifiable workers and peasants were taken down, hauled to the park and abandoned there. As more and more modern statues were added though and as the trees grew these Soviet monuments became less and less dominant.
Recently the park has been revamped with great planting, a lovely wooden curved walkway, hanging chairs and huge pat-a-poof cushions for lazing on and a whole programme of concerts, activities and classes, including yoga and tango!
