SCHOOL
An early 1950s cast iron road sign in Turville where I walked the spaniel on a very gloomy damp day. These signs were replaced in 1965 by the current pictogram showing a boy and girl crossing the road with the girl leading the boy by the hand. The new signs were created by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert (who features as the girl in the image). Although I understand why the 'new' sign is seen as more inclusive, I do rather like the older ones. Perhaps that's because I can remember wearing a cap to school and carrying a satchel. I wonder how the old style sign has survived (albeit missing the red warning triangle on top) in Turville.
