Except this is the Blue Pimpernel...and it's the true one, Anagallis arvensis ssp. foemina, a very rare arable weed. The ordinary Scarlet Pimpernel is quite common in disturbed fields and sometimes produces a blue form. The true Blue subspecies can only be identified by looking at the number of cells in the glandular hairs under a microscope. Last year, after we dug some butterfly scrapes in the arable fields forming the reserve extension, this rare subspecies came up. I've been looking for it again this year and today I found this one tiny plant in the middle of the field. Hopefully, more will show up over the next few weeks.
