Kiruna church - Sweden
A busy day…we travelled on a coach for part of the journey as the railway line near Narvik has problems, then went on the Artic Explorer train to Kiruna. There had been snow overnight so the scenery was lovely . Lots of little chalets dotted about which must be summer holiday homes. We also saw quite a few cross country skiers . This railway was built to transport iron ore from the mines in Kiruna, Sweden to Narvik, Norway around 1900. The town of Kiruna then grew up and this church is one of the biggest wooden churches in Sweden. Apparently the iron ore is still being mined and supplies 90% of Europes needs. Because the mining is so extensive under the ground the old town of Kiruna is gradually being replaced by newer buildings about 4km away. The church is shifting so there are plans to move it to a new site in 2025…a very complex task.
We are staying in cute chalets . See extras. We had a really nice dinner in the restaurant , best food on the trip so far, and this evening went to the spa which was lovely. Small so only 20 people at one time, my favourite part was the small outdoor pool , nice at night.
Still no northern lights! Maybe tomorrow….
