Hawker Hurricane flown by Ian Gleed
Sav's latest commission; the hurricane flown by Wing Commander Ian Richard Gleed. He was an Ace in the true sense of the word and after a distinguished and full on 'career' as a fighter pilot, he was taken off active service in 1941. He used this time to write a book about his experiences as a fighter pilot ( titled ' Arise To Conquer ' ) which was published in May 1942.
He could have sat out the rest of the war behind a desk, but volunteered to lead a squadron posted out to North Africa.
Between his arrival the month before the battle of El Alamein began and his death, Gleed brought his score up to 15 kills, with a final victory against a Bf-109G over Tunisia on March 17, 1943. On the 16th of April 1943 Gleed was killed in a fighter sweep in the Cap Bon area.
