Village of the damned
This afternoon eldest & your Gal took Biscuit for a bimble into the chilly Peak District.
After crossing the Snake Pass we made our way to Eyam for some light lunch & a stroll around the village. Main blip is a figure carved into the 8th Century Celtic Cross that stands in the churchyard at St.Lawrences (full pic in extras)
Eyam is the village badly hit by plague in the 17th century that bravely isolated itself for the good of others. Eldest last visited with high school almost a decade ago and before our recent pandemic. There are plaques outside some of the cottages listing the inhabitants and the dates of their passing.
Sobering stuff...unlike our selfie outside the Mechanics Institute building*, a precursor to our public libraries that would have provided adult education (to men... misogynistic much?!) in Victorian times.
* The building is now a social club, nice to see it's identity preserved, and likely also nice for a drink & game of bones if that's your thing :-)
