Clerkenwell Green

Clerkenwell Green lost its grass in the 18th century.  The greenest things there this morning were the baskets on the Lime e-bikes (but only because I couldn't spot the parakeets!).  Nevertheless Islington have much improved it recently by making it virtually traffic free, banning parked cars, and putting in lots of new paving, some benches and a few flowerbeds with trees, shrubs and daffodils.

The 1782 Middlesex Sessions House, a court house, can be seen in the background.  The Socialist May Day March begins outside the Marx Memorial Library which you can just glimpse to the right of the telephone box.  The shrubs in the centre of the photo are planted in a stone mid-19th century Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough.
