Huntly ‘s Cave…
but not the one on the Dava, another close by, where Lewis Gordon , 3rd Marquis ,hid from troops seeking out Royalists in the seventeenth century. Here, he was sustained by Mary Grant from Castle Grant, who later became his wife. A colourful character, had many children, fought battles from the age of 14 in France, England and Scotland and died early in his thirties. Huntly in Aberdeenshire does not have an ‘e’ in it.
This bleak but beautiful area was the haunt of the Skylarks today, so good to hear and see them back. Today it was sheltered from the icy wind but was still only 0°, despite a warm sun. Great for walking, but wouldn’t fancy a troglodyte existence here!
